The picture of Aron Ralston's severed arm gained notoriety after his story was depicted in the 2010 film "127 Hours." In 2003, Ralston became trapped in a canyon in Utah when a boulder fell and pinned his arm. After five days, he was forced to amputate his own arm in order to free himself and escape. The picture of his severed arm, photographed by Ralston himself before he hiked back to civilization, shows his arm pinned under the boulder with a makeshift tourniquet fashioned out of a water bottle. The image is often used to illustrate Ralston's courage and survival instincts under extreme circumstances.
